For example, if your EV has a maximum DC charging speed of 100kW, it will never charge beyond this limit, even if you connect to a 250kW ultra-rapid charger.
Why Doesn’t My EV Charge at the Full Charger Speed?
The charging speed is dictated by the lowest-capacity component in the charging system. Here’s why:
- Vehicle Limitation – Your EV’s onboard battery management system (BMS) controls the charge rate to protect battery health. If your car is capped at 100kW, that’s the most it will take, regardless of the charger’s maximum output.
- Battery State of Charge (SoC) – The closer your battery gets to full, the slower it charges. Even if your car can accept 100kW at lower charge levels, the speed will taper off as the battery fills up.
- Temperature Conditions – EV batteries charge best within an optimal temperature range. If it’s too cold or too hot, the Battery Management System may limit the charge rate to prevent damage. Given the level temperatures in Ireland this is not so much of a factor.
Does This Mean I Should Avoid High-Power Chargers?
No – Ultra-rapid chargers are still useful, even if your car can’t take full advantage of their maximum power output. They provide faster charging times compared to lower-powered alternatives. However, knowing your vehicle’s limits can help you make more efficient charging decisions.

If you’re unsure about your car’s charging capability, you can check:
